BUILDINGS
Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy has 10 ha, which among others contains a straw bale house, a tiny house, an underground conference centre, a house built entirely from recycled materials and a passive house. In all buildings, there has been experimentation with material, recycling, colour, construction and, of course, the integration of renewable energy sources.
If you want to know more about our buildings, don’t hesitate to reach out.
MAIN ENTRANCE
The main entrance is a perfect example on how recycled materials can be used as building elements: wind turbine blades are used both for aesthetic and structural reasons; instead of regular beams for sustaining the roof, old turbine blades are used.
CONFERENCE CENTER
The SkibstedFjord conference center is an example of innovative underground architecture. The building has an octagonal shape and is an example of low energy underground architecture.
TINY HOUSE

The Tiny House is a very special building: besides showcasing the concept of tiny houses (live small, live essential) it is also an example of low impact building, as all the material used are natural and environmentally friendly.
PASSIVE HOUSE
A Passive House is a building designed to consume as less energy as possible, while still delivering a good indoor climate: all building elements are designed to deliver an optimal combination of energy consumption and comfort.
STRAW BALE HOUSE
Can you imagine an entire house build of straw? It is not only possible, but it also can bring considerable living advantages: this straw bale house can be inhabited all year. The building is a stand-alone system, which takes its electricity from a 2,2 kW wind turbine located in the garden.
PLUS ENERGY HOUSE
The Plus Energy House is a house that produces more energy than it consumes. With a glass facade facing South, the building captures the heat radiations coming from the sun, which are then “stored” in the building through innovative insulation solutions.
AFRICAN HOUSE
The African house is a small buiding constructed using recycled materials, to show that everything can have a second life. The building is seat of experiment for off-grid solutions and sustainable cooking, with developing countries in mind.
BIODOME
Due to its shape, the Biodome takes full advantage of all positions of the sun. In addition to that, two large ponds full of fishes and plants provide a perfect example on how plant growing can be done without the use of industrial fertilizers: all the nutrients are produced and consumed within the system, making the process very sustainable.

- Modern straw construction at Feldballe Independent SchoolIn the 90s, Denmark’s first straw house approved for habitation was built at the Nordic Folkecenter for Sustainable Energy. Lars Keller, who was heavily involved in the construction at the time, still works with straw houses, which today are something quite different from stacked straw bales. An example of modern straw construction Feldballe Friskole’s science and education building, which was built in 2021. The walls consist of straw elements, which are basically a wooden frame filled with straw.
- The smart strawbale houseAmongst the sustainable buildings at Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy we find the strawbale house which was built in 1998. The strawbale house has it’s own wind turbine, solar heating, battery bank and is filled with tech and ‘internet of things’ that makes it possible to program the house for any imaginable energy-scenario.
