Desert Power®
Desert Power® aims at delivering green methanol to the shipping industry, to contribute towards the green transition of the sector.
Desert Power® aims at delivering green methanol to the shipping industry, to contribute towards the green transition of the sector.
At first, biomass will be utilized as the carbon source, to produce methanol, but the ultimate goal of the project is to capture carbon through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.
Folkecenter will contribute by taking care of the market research and by supporting the management of the project.

About the Project
Methanol – The New Motor Fuel
There is no chemical difference between methanol, biomethanol, and e-methanol; their production methods set them apart.
Methanol is traditionally derived from coal and natural gas, whereas biomethanol is produced from biomass, and e-methanol is synthesized using renewable electricity.
In the case of biomethanol, both the energy and carbon originate from biomass sources, while e-methanol’s carbon can be sourced from biomass, the air, or geothermal facilities.
Desert Power®‘s ultimate goal is to capture carbon through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology; however, in the initial stages, biomass will be utilized as the carbon source. This strategic approach demonstrates our commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly methanol production.
Potential Customers
MAN Energy Solutions has received orders for over one hundred methanol powered ME-LGIM engines, with twenty-five of them destined for A.P. Moller – Maersk’s container ships.
The first of these is already on its maiden voyage and is expected in Copenhagen on September 14, where it will be named by Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
Notably, one container ship is estimated to consume approximately 45,000 tons of methanol annually.
Maersk’s adoption of green methanol has inspired other major shipowners, driven by the IMO’s commitment to achieve fossil-free shipping within two decades.
Desert Power® will supply green methanol to meet the demands of sustainable shipping.
The Location
The Danish Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) has seed-funded a methanol plant to be constructed in the world’s sunniest region, strategically positioned close to the busiest shipping route.
The chosen location is the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, situated in Al Wusta Governorate, the Sultanate of Oman, boasting a tropical desert climate.
The upcoming methanol production in the Sultanate of Oman will incorporate a diverse mix of sustainable feedstock sources, including wind, solar energy, waste and residues, all abundant in the area.
The Gulf region alone generates a staggering 30 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually; at the same time, a vast area of 250 sq km has been allocated for solar and wind farms, taking advantage of approximately 3,500 hours of sunshine and strong coastal Indian Ocean winds throughout the year, creating the ideal conditions for harnessing renewable energy sources for the methanol production process.
