Change Agents for a Green Society

Change of plans

The project was originally planned to engage young people to be green agents for a green society by affecting their local civilian population.

But because of the severe situation in Ukraine, the original project purpose is not currently relevant. Instead, the project has been revised so the activities in the project deals with the development of proposals and assistance that can directly help people in Ukraine with a immediate problem, namely getting energy for heating.

With the project, the project partners want to help the Ukrainians in their current difficult situation focus on a specific problem; continue to be able to supply heat and at the same time do more heating sustainable.

Project Objectives

The Change Agents for a Green Society aims to:

  • Increase awareness in Ukraine on alternatives to the current fossil-fuel based heating that is dominant in Ukraine, and how district heating can be an important part of the transition, based on Danish experiences.
  • Develop two -three pre-feasibility studies on how Ukraine district heating systems can be converted to renewable energy and increase energy efficiency.
  • Engage with local actors on the realization of the transition of district heating to renewable energy
  • Prepare the realization of renewable energy and energy efficiency in district heating.
  • Initiate a resource library for transition to renewable energy of district heating and energy savings in district heating.
  • An event and public outreach in Denmark about the situation in Ukraine and the value of Danish–Ukraine partnerships on all levels.

Events

EVENT 20/12: Solar Heating — Challenges and Opportunities for District Heating

NGO Ecoclub and partners conducted a number of activities related to district heating. Local authorities representatives are in a difficult situation when they cannot provide high-quality central heating services due to limited energy sources and chronic problems of the system, and do not imagine all potentially possible technical solutions to improve the existing situation. In Ukraine, discussions are ongoing regarding potential solutions to replace natural gas as the main energy carrier for the production of thermal energy for heating. We have already presented one of the possible options, i.e. heat pumps, at a webinar. Another option is solar heating. And that is what the event at 20th december is about.

EVENT 19/12: A Greener Ukraine with Renewable Energy after the War

While the war is unfortunately still raging, many are planning a more environmentally friendly future of Ukraine. We are planning how Ukraine’s many district heating networks can converted to renewable energy. Today, most Ukrainian district heating systems are heated with gas, a large part of which comes from Russia. It is not sustainable. On the other hand, Ukraine has large potentials for renewable energy. We show concrete examples and nationwide overviews how they can be utilized for sustainable district heating.

The event took place in Aarhus, Denmark, 19th December 2022.

Webinar: Heat pumps in central heating systems

No fewer than 90 participants turned up on Zoom when the camera was switched on for the webinar “Heat pumps in central heating: how it is installed and how much it costs”, an event in the Change Agents for a Green Society project. Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy is the project manager and the webinar was for exchanging knowledge and experiences about heat pumps.
