You must bring …

To make a hay box, you need to bring some materials.

We would of course encourage you to find the materials at home, in thrift stores or via recycling sites such as DBA or Gul og Gratis.

  • A basket of suitable size for your largest pots. The basket must measure the diameter of the pot +15 cm. (e.g. these)
  • Plenty of filling (read below why). It can be sheep’s wool, or filling from duvets/pillows/cushions/mattresses.
  • Fabric for pillow cover (x2). Measurements: basket diameter +10cm.
  • Fabric for lining the basket. Approx. 100×100 cm. However, again depending on the diameter and depth of the curve.
    • See recycled fabric for sale, 50 km distance from 7760 here – or you can use some old bedding/old sheets.
  • A long darning needle, to sew the filling and cover to the basket.
  • Strong thread
  • Good, strong scissors

A hay box?

A hay box is a kitchen tool that prepares food in a much more energy-saving way.

Let’s take potatoes as an example.

The cooking of the potatoes starts as usual: on the stove. But instead of leaving the potatoes on the stove until they are fully cooked, you turn off the stove when the water with the potatoes in it is well up and boiling. The lid is placed on the pan, and then the pan is placed in the hay box and covered.

And then they just have to be there until they are fully cooked. Which doesn’t take much longer than if the pan with the potatoes had been left on the hob and the stove had remained on.

It saves a lot of energy.

The stove is one of the kitchen appliances that is often in use, and for a long time at a time. Therefore, there is actually quite a bit of savings by using a hay box.

The potatoes are just the “easy” example to bring up. It is actually also possible to make stews, soups and stews with a hay box, if the insulation capacity of your hay box is top notch. And you can ensure that it is when you participate in the workshop.
