Happy Birthday Dear Jane! 🎶

Today, April 30, we, the employees, gathered around the meeting table with breakfast bread, flowers and flags to celebrate superintendent, Jane Kruse. It is her birthday today, so today we are of course working hard to make sure she has a nice day.

Jane Kruse turns 78!

🇩🇰 🇩🇰 Congratulations on 78 years! 🇩🇰 🇩🇰

Love at Nordic Folkecenter

Nordic Folkecenter is not only a place where renewable energy solutions are developed and people are educated and become smarter – at Nordic Folkecenter love can flourish.

Yazmin and Robin stopped by at the end of March because they wanted to celebrate that it had been 10 years since they met at Nordic Folkecenter. They wanted to mark the day by being here on the anniversary.

Today they live on the Norwegian west coast, where together they own a local carpentry company.

Congratulations on the 10-year love anniversary to the two, wishes from all employees at Nordic Folkecenter.

Anna Krenz visits Nordic Folkecenter

The month of April also meant a pleasant visit from Anna Krenz, who creates Nordic Folkecenter’s graphic material, and there was plenty to get hold of.

This time it was, among other things, banner production for our participation in Green Future Thy and event planning for the webinar “The Great Green Wall: Africa’s Answers to Climate Change Problems”.

And of course really good conversations and pleasant company.

The Children Are Waiting – Drive Them to the Nordic Folkecenter

Green Safari Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy

The season for Green Safari at the Nordic Folkecenter has started again, and we are looking forward to all the visits from schools and kindergartens from near and far. At Green Safari, the children learn about sustainability, green energy and the UN’s global goals, and this initiates good conversations about how we all ensure that our planet lasts as long as possible and continues to be a safe place for us all to live.

However, not all institutions can afford a bus when they want to go on a trip to Nordic Folkecenter. That is why we have made it possible for companies, parent groups and individuals to sponsor a bus trip to a school or kindergarten. The purpose of the sponsorship agreement is, as a sponsor, to give school and kindergarten children the opportunity to come and experience Green Safari, and the sponsor is thus a crucial partner in “educating” a climate- and environmentally conscious generation.

If you want to hear more about the sponsorship agreement, or become a sponsor for a school class or kindergarten, send an email to pkm@folkecenter.dk

Experiment: Sphagnum versus Coconut Mulch/Coco Coir

Mathias Dyreborg, our organic farmer, has done a small experiment with iceberg lettuce and set up the camera so we can follow along. Below you can watch the video where we compare sphagnum and coconut mulch, also called coco coir.

The purpose of the experiment is first and foremost to show that there are alternatives to sphagnum. Spagnum is obtained from bogs, which are some of nature’s largest CO2 stores (Carbon Capture and Storage). CO2 which is released when sphagnum is extracted. Coconut mulch is not climate-neutral, and not a local resource, but it is significantly less CO2-burdening than mined sphagnum, and it is one of the more widespread alternatives to sphagnum, and therefore easily available in many plant centres.

In the experiment, it is mixed with organic compost soil in a ratio of 70/30 (after the coconut mulch has been soaked in water).

There are many other alternatives to sphagnum, other than coconut mulch.

Here is, for example, a recipe for potting soil from the National Association of Practical Ecology:
1 part topsoil from garden or greenhouse
1 part well-turned, nutrient-poor compost
1 part sand

If you need more soil mixture, the recipe is:
4 parts used, homemade potting soil, greenhouse soil or garden soil from last season
1 part well-turned, nutrient-poor compost
Possibly 1 part sand.

Happy planting.

Great Green Wall Folkecenter

30 May 2024, 12:00 CEST

Webinar: The Great Green Wall: Africa’s answer to climate change problems (EN)

Join us for a webinar that will shed light on the inspiring “Great Green Wall” project in Africa. This innovative project aims to combat climate change, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss by creating a belt of forested areas across various regions of Africa.

During the webinar, experts and practitioners from our partner organizations in Mali and Uganda will present the main principles, objectives, and achievements of the “Green Wall” project and also tell about their own practice in fostering biodiversity through planting trees. We will hear about the project’s development first-hand – from people who are active and involved in it.

We will also examine the challenges encountered in the implementation of this ambitious initiative and discuss the importance of sustainable development for the future of the African continent and its pioneering meaning for countries on other continents.

The language of the webinar is English.
